Declutter. We tend to collect lots of stuff through the years. Getting rid of items that you do not need will make keeping your house clean easier and help with packing once you move. If you haven’t used it in a year, get it out of there.
Hire a Cleaning Crew. A good deep clean of your house a couple times a year is a good idea all the time, and certainly a must prior to putting your house on the market. It will take a lot of stress off your plate to also hire someone to clean your “show” house at least every other week.
Clean All Carpets. We bring in lots of dirty stuff on our shoes and feet that get trapped in our carpet fibers. Professional cleaning equipment can make your carpets a couple shades prettier and freshen odors.
Paint. If your house is a display of the entire color spectrum, repaint it a neutral color. That may seem boring, but your house will appeal to a wider range of potential buyers. If you have recently painted, go around and touch up scuff marks.
Fix Broken Items. Normal wear and tear on a house can cause things to break down, and if it’s not major, we live with it. Now is the time to replace that cracked switch plate cover in the laundry room, tighten the door knob in the garage, and reattach the weather stripping on the basement door.
Be a Finisher. Through the years, you’ve taken on a few larger projects that the final, little finishing touches never got completed. Take an afternoon and check those things off the list.
De-Personalize. You want potential buyers to feel like they’ve come home, and picture themselves living in your house. That will be difficult if they are distracted by your family photos.
Consider Curb Appeal. You don’t have to host an episode of Yard Crashers, but you do need to weed. The potential buyer’s first impression is when they pull up to your house and if the first thing they see is a non-maintained mess of ugly landscaping, that sets the tone for their viewing of your house.
I hope these tips for getting your house ready for the market are helpful. Of course, a professional pre-inspection of your home, by SafeTech Property Inspection, can bring to light maintenance repairs that could help get you to the closing table faster, with a larger sale price. (423) 457-5900
